Groundhog mid-firing.

This groundhog was built smaller than traditionally made in North Carolina for the NCPC to run workshops and do quicker firings. For me this was perfect - a kiln load being smaller and a firing shorter using less wood meant I could fire more often learning more and more about wood kilns.

The kiln in the background is a Noborigama style wood-kiln with two chambers and a fire box in front. The first chamber produces more subtle flashing but is excellent for glaze work, and the second is typically used as a salt chamber. Two different styles of kilns built for different styles of pottery, with different resources, but both offering great tools for firing work.
